HOSTED BY WATERSTONES
BITCH LIT is a monthly book club devoted to new feminist writing and cult classics by women. Join them at Waterstones for wine and irreverent, fun discussion led by literary critic Lucy Scholes.
What to expect?
On November 1st they will be discussing Fran Ross’s forgotten classic Oreo, which was first published in 1974.
Described by Booker Prizer winner Marlon James as ‘crazy, sexy, cool’, this novel – now published in the UK for the first time – is playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb.
Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.
Date: Thursday 1st November, starts at 6.30pm
Location: Waterstones, 82 Gower Street, London, WC1E 6EQ
