No Is Not Enough: Defeating the New Shock Politics By Naomi Klein

A MERIT CLUB BOOK REVIEW

This is a look at how we arrived at this surreal political moment, how to keep it from getting a lot worse, and how, if we keep our heads, we can flip the script.
— Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein, an award-winning journalist, social activist and acclaimed author is best known for her political views and she has become the voice for the movement of movements. Her newly published book, No Is Not Enough is a must read for the Trump era. In her book, Naomi Klein looks at how we arrived at this surreal political movement that we are currently living in and she discusses how his appalling changes can be resisted. At first she breaks down and explains why everything is awful but then she restores your faith by building it all back up and telling you that it doesn’t all have to be awful.

She gives hope to all who feel that the Trump era will never make any improvement. In her book she reveals that this feeling of confusion that has consumed everyone is a deliberate. All around the world shock politic tactics are being used to create problem after problem in order to push through policies that destroy society. Klein wants her readers to not only just refuse but she wants them to actively resist. Her book is an engaging and articulate piece that encourages people to go beyond saying ‘No’ and to instead say what they actually want.

Klein looks at Trump during the lead up to the presidential election and looks at what he has done whilst being in the presidential office. She looks at his branding, his obsession with the rich and his outlook on war. We see a common theme running throughout her book which is that her previous books (No Logo, The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything) all tie in together to understand Donald Trump. Her ideas about branding and disaster capitalism and the shock doctrine are essential in helping us to understand what is happening to society.

Even though it has been over a year since the presidential election, if you’re still in shock, like many others, then this is a book for you as Klein cleverly rekindles the hope that real change is possible.
